Lodging Detection

Detect crop lodging from RGB canopy images using gradient orientation analysis. Upright crops produce predominantly horizontal Sobel gradients (vertical stems), while lodged crops shift toward vertical gradients (horizontal stem orientation).

Experimental: Gradient-orientation lodging detection works best on nadir canopy images with clear stem/leaf texture. Results should be validated against field observations. This method does not replace crop-specific ML models.
